Safe riding is a prototype app designed to increase safety in traffic for cyclists. It enables users to plan their trips based on the safest or fastest routes, view roadworks, bike paths, traffic lights, and parking spots. Additionally, users can learn about traffic regulations to increase awareness and safety.

Overview

Background

The group was assigned a task to create a screen-based support for a problem that arises in everyday situations related to one of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. We chose goal 3.6, which focuses on reducing the number of deaths and injuries in road traffic accidents worldwide. We decided to focus on cyclists as our target group, and the goal was to create a prototype for a screen-based solution to potential problems that cyclists experience in their daily lives.

Discover

To identify the cyclists problems and needs we went to Hötorget to observe cyclists for a couple of hours. To discover pain points and to further understand their needs we conducted interviews with two cyclists. To increase the chances of creating a solution that suits various types of cyclists, we interviewed an experienced cyclist and a novice.

Define

Pain points

We defined pain points of the cyclists problems and needs based on the observation.

  • Lack of awareness of traffic regulations

  • Narrow bike lanes, crowded with cyclists

  • Roadworks

  • Lack of bike lanes in certain areas

  • Many cyclists disregard red lights

Story scenario

To further understand the context of the pain points, we wrote four story scenarios.

Develop

Conceptual scenarios

To explore solutions to the pain points, we wrote a conceptual scenario to each story scenario.

Brainstorm solutions

We brainstormed about features to include in the prototype based on scenarios and pain points.

  • Learning traffic rules and tips

  • Bike-adapted map with

    • Parking spots

    • Bike lanes

    • Roadworks

  • Favorite/latest routes

  • Alternative routes, filtered by
    • Speed
    • Safety
    • Traffic lights
Deliver

Paper prototype

We created a paper prototype and conducted usability testing to identify improvements and strengths before starting digital prototyping.

Test

We conducted two usability tests with an experienced cyclist and a beginner cyclist. After the tests I continued to iterate on the prototype individually       see the final prototype under Result.
